Food Protection and Safety

Regulation

The Environmental Health Food Program department is responsible for programs that protect our community from the transmission of disease by food. It provides state licensing, inspection and education to food service operations in Geauga County. Geauga Public Health, with the help of the Food Services department, enforces food service rules and laws, which are set forth by the Ohio Revised Code and the Ohio Administrative code. These rules apply to food service operations, retail food establishments, temporary and mobile food services, and vending machine locations.

Licensing and Inspection

The licensing period for all food service operations is one year beginning the first day of March and ending the last day of February of the succeeding year. Fees are dependent on classification and size of the operation.

Our food safety staff are responsible for licensing and inspecting Food Service Operations (restaurants, bars, daycare centers, hospitals, nursing homes, etc); Retail Food Establishments (grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations); Mobile Food Service Operations and Mobile Retail Food Establishments (fairs/festival trailers); Temporary Food Service Operations; and Vending Machine Locations (coffee, sandwiches, ice cream).

When a health code violation is discovered, the problem is explained and corrective measures are taken. This protects against food borne illnesses resulting from improper food preparation, handling, and storage as defined by the health code regulations.

Clean Inspection Award (CIA)

Geauga Public Health annually awards a Clean Inspection Award to food service operations and retail establishments that exemplify food safety through food safety knowledge and training, a clean inspection history, and operating according to state and local regulations. Recognition of the winners occurs at the April Board of Health meeting with a certificate and a window cling to notify customers of your accomplishment. The requirements and application are in the link below. If you feel you may qualify please mail or fax (440-285-7720) your application to our office by March 31.
