Sewage System Installers & Service Providers

Sewage System Installers, Service Providers, and Pumper/Haulers

All septic companies licensed with the State of Ohio and working in Geauga County as a Sewage Installer, Sewage Service Provider, or Septage Hauler must register with Geauga Public Health (GPH). GPH is responsible for ensuring that contractors are properly bonded, insured, educated, and inspected to perform installations, maintenance, and evaluations on Sewage Treatment Systems (STS). Please see below the current lists of Geauga County-registered installers, service providers, and pumper/hauler/cleaners as well as a fact sheet on STS Contractor requirements. For more information on contractor registration requirements, visit the Ohio Department of Health Registration Information page.

Please note that this department will not recommend specific contractors, but does recommend obtaining quotes, references, and suggestions from neighbors. GPH is not responsible for the business practices of contractors, but does audit their work on septic systems regularly.

Manufacturer Certification Requirements

Please note that all NPDES Discharging and Spray Irrigation Systems must be serviced by a company holding certification from the manufacturer of the system. Please refer to the chart on the service provider list to determine what companies are acceptable.

Any other mechanical/pretreatment systems installed since 1/1/2007 must also be serviced by companies with certification from the manufacturer of the system OR by companies that have obtained the OOWA alternative training for pretreatment systems.

Homeowner Certification

For pretreatment systems installed prior to 2007, homeowners are eligible to become registered to service their own Home Sewage Treatment Systems. This can be a good option to save on service costs for residents who are handy and willing to learn. Because homeowners would only service their own system, GPH is able to waive several requirements including bonding, liability insurance, continuing education, and registration fees. To become certified, homeowners are required to pass the state test on the rules (open-book, and free through GPH), and then complete an on-site training on their system with a GPH staff or a registered service provider who is willing to provide training and sign-off for homeowners. Please reach out to GPH at (440) 279-1914 if you are interested in this option.
