Safe Communities was introduced to Ohio in December 1996 as a conceptual strategy for comprehensive traffic injury control at the local level. The goal of the Safe Communities Coalition is to reduce the number of traffic-related motor vehicle deaths in Geauga county by increasing seat belt usage, increasing motorcycle safety awareness, and reducing distracted and impaired driving.

Safe Communities is funded through Ohio Department of Public Safety and based on a three year average of fatal crashes. Geauga County Safe Communities coalition is comprised of safety advocates including local, county, state law enforcement, ODOT, Geauga County Health Department, Geauga County Engineers, Kent State University- Geauga, AAA, and local businesses.

The Coalition conducts campaigns and events locally to create awareness and promote traffic safety. The Coalition also participates in national campaigns including “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
